Free Swim Evaluation
To ensure that your child is placed in the appropriate class, we strongly recommend a swim evaluation before registration for participants new to our swim lesson program. Appointments must be made in advance with the Aquatic Director. If your child is under the age of 6, you must be prepared to enter the water if needed. YMCA Swim Lessons are designed to allow the participant to have fun in the water while being guided to learn swimming skills. Activities are based on the developmental abilities of the participant. Participants will learn the basic skills that build on one another as the levels increase. They also learn about water safety, water sports and games, character values/personal growth and rescue.
Ages 6 months – 36 months
This program promotes water enrichment and aquatic readiness for children
6 36 months of age. Parents will accompany their child in the water during this lesson and will learn ways to help their child become more comfortable in and around water.
PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS
Ages 3-5 years
At this level, children begin to attend classes without their parents. This level helps children develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water, and develop independent movement in the water. It is designed for new swimmers, teaching basic paddle stroke and kicking skills, pool safety, and comfort in holding their faces in the water while blowing bubbles and swimming. To advance, must demo front/back float with Individual Floatation Device, paddle stroke front/back 5 feet without Individual Floatation Device.
This advanced beginner level reinforces Pike skills. It is for children who are comfortable in the water. They are taught to flutter kick, dive, float, and perform the progressive paddle stroke. Children can swim across the pool without assistance by the end of this level. To advance, must demo 20 seconds front/back float and paddle stroke front/back/side 15 feet without Individual Floatation Device. Must complete PIKE or demonstrate required skills.
At this level children review previous skills, improve skills, build endurance by swimming on their front and back, and learn to tread water and perform the progressive paddle stroke. Children can swim across the pool on their front and back without assistance by the end of this level. To advance, must demo front alternating paddle with rhythmic breathing 20 feet without Individual Floatation Device. Must complete EEL or demonstrate required skills.
Children at this level review previously learned skills and refine their crawl and back stroke and floating skills. They also learn underwater swimming skills. Children can swim a length of the pool on the front and back at the end of this level. To progress, must demo front alternating paddle with rhythmic breathing 40 feet without Individual Floatation Device. This level is for the child who has the endurance to swim the length of the pool without equipment, has the concept of rotary breathing with over arm recovery, backstroke, and personal safety skills. Must complete RAY or demonstrate required skills.
PROGRESSIVE SWIM LESSONS
This level is for the beginning school-age swimmers. It acquaints children with the pool, the use of flotation devices, and front and back floating. By the end of this level, they should know the front, side and back paddle strokes, some synchronized swimming, as well as some water sports and games skills.
Swimmers continue to build upon basic skills, now performing more skills without the aid of a flotation device. They are introduced to lead-up strokes to the front and back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke. More synchronized swimming and wetball skills are taught, as well as some diving skills. Must complete Poliwog or demonstrate required skills.
This is the initial intermediate level. The children further refine the lead-up strokes they have learned as their skills become more like those normally used in swimming. They learn more synchronized swimming movements, wetball skills, and diving skills. Must complete Guppy or demonstrate required skills.
At this point, swimmers work to perform the crawl stroke, elementary backstroke, back crawl stroke, and sidestroke, with turns. They are introduced to the butterfly stroke. They continue learning additional synchronized swimming movements, wetball skills, diving skills, and are introduced to the use of masks and fins. Must complete Minow or demonstrate required skills.
At this advanced level, students work on refining their strokes and increasing their endurance. They develop the ability to perform more complex combinations of synchronized swimming movements, learn to dive off a one meter board, and develop better wetball playing skills. They are also introduced to the use of a snorkel. Must complete Fish or demonstrate required skills.
The students at this level continue to improve their strokes, with starts and turns, and are introduced to the inverted breaststroke, the crawl, and the over-arm sidestroke. Opportunities are provided for further work on synchronized swimming, wetball, and skin diving. Must complete Flying Fish or demonstrate required skills.

YMCA Lifeguard Course
Complete CPR/AED, 1st Aid, BBP & O2 courses for the Professional Rescuer before the end of the LG Course. Participants of the lifeguard course must meet all the following requirements:
- 500 yard swim using four different strokes
- Tread water for two minutes without using your arms.
- Perform a nine to twelve foot head first surface dive
- Successfully complete all required skills
- Pass a written exam
- Attend all sessions

This class is for children at the Minnow level who would like to learn the basic figures and routine skills of Synchronized Swimming. This class is also an excellent place to start for those considering joining the Synchronized Team – Synchrogators. For more information, visit our website.

Synchronized Swim Team
The Cincinnati YMCA Synchrogators is a competitive synchronized swim team for girls & boys in grade school through high school. Sign-ups are encouraged in June through September, as the team begins it’s season in the Fall. Our comprehensive program includes strength training, conditioning, figure skills and routine skills.
Adaptive Swim Program
The Adaptive Swim Program is a swimming class designed for any physically or mentally challenged child. Children 8 and older are given the opportunity to participate in Special Olympics. Special volunteers will assist your child in the pool.
Pre-Cuda (Pre-Competitive) Swim Team
Members must be at least 5 years old by the beginning of the session they are participating. Emphasis in this group will be to teach the stroke techniques for the four competitive strokes. Racing starts, turns, and finishes will be taught. The Pre-Cuda practice group has three 10 week sessions that include a total of 30 instruction practices/days. Practices are offered three times per week. Attendance is not required, however, attendance at two practices per week is recommended. The group will be divided into ability practice lanes. M.E. Lyons YMCA/Anderson Barracudas Swim Team
The YMCA offers an exciting and comprehensive swim team, both Winter and Summer, designed to help young people grow and develop mentally, physically and spiritually into productive contributing adults. The training program consists of thorough instruction in the four competitive strokes, starts, turns, and a gradual increase in endurance, strength, flexibility and speed training. The M.E. Lyons YMCA/Anderson Barracudas Masters swimming program is designed for swimmers of all abilities and with all swimming backgrounds. Each workout is flexible so that experienced swimmers are challenged and those newer to the water have time to become comfortable and learn the sport. Adult fitness swimmers who are looking for a great form of exercise, those who want to compete, and tri-athletes are all welcome. Even if you have never swum competitively, or do not know all the swimming strokes, there is a place for you in this group.
Each week, during the winter season, the Masters program offers six workouts. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings there are un-coached workouts. On Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Saturday mornings there will be a coach on deck. The coached workouts range from 2500 yards up to 4000 yards which are made up of sets of different length and intensity based on experience and skill level of each swimmer. Classes are offered to members as a free benefit to their membership. Therefore, you must be a member to participate in any water fitness program. For the safety of members of all ages, children 8 and under are not permitted in the pool or on the deck during water exercise classes. School Age Before and Afterschool Care
M.E. Lyons YMCA operates before and afterschool programs for the Forest Hills School District and Locust Corner Elementary in the New Richmond School District. These programs are licensed by the state of Ohio. Academic and recreational time is provided in a relaxing atmosphere. Register now for 2014-2015 before and after-school program! Teens gain valuable teamwork and volunteer experience and build a healthy spirit, mind, and body. Plus, during the summer (end of year for club) they have the opportunity to attend the Blue Ridge Leader School with hundreds of other teens for a week-long training.

Programs for school age children are offered on “off school” days such as conference days and holidays. The only exceptions are Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day (when the YMCA is closed), Labor Day, and Memorial Day.

FAMILY ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS
All YMCA enrichment programs are now value-added benefits to your membership. All programs are offered on an ongoing basis and no registration is required. Ages 18 months – 3 years
This class gives you and your young child the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and create art! In this setting, the process of creating the art is our first priority. Some mediums explored may be finger painting, easel painting, stamping, and more.
Adventures in Art
Your child will begin their adventure in art through a variety of themes, mediums and activities.
Grab your chef hats and come join us for a cooking experience that will be delightful! We will combine literature books with cooking activities. During each lesson, we will also incorporate math skills such as counting, measuring, and number recognition. Bring your little chefs and their appetite too!
Wild Wacky Science
Your junior scientist will experience various scientific principles through hands on activities such as making rockets, volcanoes, slime, and much more!
Ages 16 and up
You do not have to be an artist to take this class. Learn the basic techniques of watercolor.
Intermediate: The intermediate class takes the beginner class and continues to add difficulty.
Advanced: The advanced class offers elite tricks with a combination of dance, twirl, and gymnastics.
All students must be tested into the class.

Big Forest Nation
The M.E. Lyons YMCA Y Guides, Y Princess and Trailblazers programs help develop positive relationships between fathers and their children grades K-6th. Tribes are formed around school and neighborhood groupings with six to ten parent/child couples. Tribes meet monthly, September through May. Under the guidance of their dads, kids have the freedom to explore their interests in a creative and imaginative way. Regular meetings combine ceremony and programming which includes crafts, games, or storytelling. The central theme of the program draws upon the culture of the Native American Indian to help promote a positive and lasting relationship between parents and children. Monthly events are held for all program participants including campouts, roller skating, bowling, pinewood derby and much more.
Tippi Toes Dance Classes

GROUP FITNESS CLASSES
Classes are offered to members as a free benefit to their membership. Therefore, you must be a member to participate in any group fitness program. For the safety of members of all ages, children 8 and under are not permitted in the studio or gym area during group exercise classes. Children 9 and older are permitted to participate if they have completed the youth and/or teen fitness orientation and are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children ages 12 and under are not permitted to use weights in any of the classes. Group Fitness schedules are available at the welcome center.
Increase muscle tone and strength, using various equipment (hand weights, etc), includes floor work.
Boot Camp (formerly called Interval Blast)
Alternating bursts of high-intensity work with low-intensity activity to maximize the heart's effort. Focus on cardio and muscular strength and endurance, through timed activities, allowing for a whole body workout, including abdominals. A variety of equipment is used in the class.
Cardio Kick Boxing
Non-stop class includes high intensity interval training, plyometrics, kickboxing drills and cardio kickboxing combinations. Learn to integrate kicks, punches and blocks into your cardio workout!
An interval workout incorporating cardio and strength training using a variety of equipment, including bench, body bars, stability balls, tubing and weights.
It’s a high energy, low impact dance class with an emphasis on keeping the beat to pop and hip hop songs. Similar to Zumba, but with different moves and music, you will burn calories, tone muscles and have fun doing it.
An indoor bike ride that simulates situations similar to riding a bike outdoors. Movements include hill climbs, sprints and interval training. Instructor uses music, motivation and enthusiastic coaching to lead students through a ride that best suits their fitness level and goals. Please pick up a pass at the Welcome Center no earlier than 30 minutes prior to the start of class. Passes may not be reserved by phone. Only one pass per person. Bring water and towel to class.
Group Cycling + TRX
30 minute cycling class plus optional TRX strength for 30 minutes. Pick up pass at front desk as described above.
Tone and strengthen the entire body using a variety of resistance equipment, including body bars, stability ball, barbells, hand-weights, and rubber resistance tubing. Enhance your posture and balance while increasing your bone density. Abdominal work included!
Early morning energy boost for all. Includes warm-up, aerobics, strength and endurance work.
Focus on strengthening the core muscles, or the “Power House” (including the gluteals, abdominals, and back). Improve flexibility and strength for the overall body.
Silver Sneakers® Cardio Circuit
Increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance with a standing circuit workout. Upper-body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is offered for support, stretching and relaxation exercises. Please obtain a pass at Welcome Center up to 30 minutes before class.
Silver Sneakers® Muscular Strength and Range of Motion
A variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball are offered for resistance; and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support.
Silver Sneakers® Yoga Stretch
Move your body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and a final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.
A high-intensity, low-impact program for all. Involves stepping up and down on an adjustable platform, while simultaneously performing upper body movements. Includes strength training and abdominal work.
Taught for relaxation, stress release, flexibility, and fun!
Tai Chi for Beginners
Movement of the joints based on coordination and relaxation as opposed to muscle tension. Increase flexibility, muscle strength and relieve stress.
TRX Suspension Training
Total body workout to build power, flexibility, core strength and endurance. Classes are free, but limited to nine people, so please get a pass from the Welcome Center up to 30 minutes before the class begins. One pass per person.
This class focuses on directing the stimulation deeper than the muscular tissues, targeting the connective tissues; such as ligaments, joints and even bones; that are not normally exercised in an active style of practice. It emphasizes muscle relaxation, will increase range of motion and is suitable for all levels.
Combine elements of strength, balance, concentration, flexibility, meditation, breath control, and relaxation. No previous yoga experience is necessary.
Low-impact and high-intensity. Lose weight (you’ll burn up to 500 calories per class), tone your muscles, have fun and learn different Latin movements (Meringue, Salsa, Cha-Cha, and more). It feels more like a party then exercise!
For the safety of members of all ages, children 8 and under are not permitted in the studio or gym area during group exercise classes. Children 9 and older are permitted to participate if they have completed the youth and/or teen fitness orientation and are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Men's Basketball League
Come join the excitement. This is a competitive league. Cost includes eight league games with a tournament. Shirts are provided for the tournament champions.

2014 Spring and Fall Youth Soccer Program
Boys and girls, ages 3-9, are invited to join our Youth Soccer League. This is an instructional league with the goal of teaching the fundamentals of soccer, such as dribbling, shooting, and basic game concepts. Youth will be placed on teams based on their age. Players can play up an age group, but they cannot play down. 3-4 year old teams will practice for 20 minutes and then play a 30 minute game. 5-6 and 7-9 year old teams will practice one night a week and play their games on Saturdays. They will practice/play on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday night between the hours of 6-8 p.m. for one hour. Parents will be able to sign up for their practice nights/game at the member service desk upon completion of the registration form and payment.

Tae Kwon Do
Tae Kwon Do is the world's most popular Martial Art with roots in Korea. It is similar to Karate, with a little more emphasis on kicking techniques. It is also an Olympic sport. Situational self-defense is included. Classes are taught by instructor Kim Limes, an eighth degree black belt. The goal is to improve students' physical and mental well-being. The classes are for students ages 7 to adults. It is also a great sport to do with the whole family! The classes are on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. The prices are $97 for members and $134 for program participants.

With a focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, Y volunteers give men, women and children of all ages and from all walks of life the resources and support they need to be healthy, confident, connected and secure.
Volunteers of the Y:
Join our branch board and committees
Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of the community
Coach our sports teams and teach many of our classes
Motivate and support youth in building the character strengths, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and the pursuit of higher education and goals through the Y tutoring and mentoring programs
Extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier
Advocate for the Y’s efforts to influence policies and initiatives that positively impact societal issues of importance to the nation, and your community
Participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors
