YMCA
Offering FREE Lifeguard Certification Training
At Five Locations
Thanks
to a $25,000 grant from Duke Energy, the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati is offering
free lifeguard certification training at five branches, convenient for people
in neighborhoods throughout the area.
YMCAs
teach millions of people to swim every year and quality lifeguards are an integral
part of safety around water, said Elizabeth McDougal, aquatics coordinator
for the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati. Duke Energy has afforded us a wonderful
opportunity to provide this extensive training free to help ensure all pools,
including those of the YMCA, have well qualified lifeguards this summer and year
round.
If anyone is considering lifeguarding
anytime in the next year, I encourage them to sign up for one of these sessions.
Once earned, a certification will last two years, McDougal added.
Each
session will include 42 hours of education and will prepare participants for certification
exams in CPR, first aid, life saving skills including use of the automated electronic
oxygen administration, and healthy practices with bodily fluids. The workshops
are open to anyone age 16 or older who passes a swimming evaluation. Enrollment
is limited to 25 people per site.
A schedule
for the YMCA Duke Energy lifeguarding certification training sessions is included
below. To find out more or to register, interested people should call the YMCA
of Greater Cincinnati at 513-362-YMCA (9622).
With
14 branches and close to 40 pools, the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati serves more
swimmers than any other private organization in the area. More than 1000 lifeguards
are employed each year, with water safety as a top priority.
The
YMCA is the largest non-governmental, non-profit community services organization
in this area that is committed to helping everyone reach their God-given potential
in spirit, mind, and body regardless of their ability to pay. Each year
tens of thousands of people from children to seniors are able to participate in
YMCA programs and services because of financial assistance, including health and
wellness, active older adult programs, youth and teen camp, swimming and water
safety lessons , teen achievers, college readiness, and job preparedness. With
60 locations, the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati is also the largest provider of child
care programs, that in 2007, served nearly 10,000 kids on YMCA scholarships. The
annual Strong Kids Campaign helps make that possible.
