BLACK
ACHIEVERS WHAT'S IN A NAME?
The
name, Black Achievers, represents and describes the historical
origin and mission of the program. The
original mission of the program is unchanged; to provide
minority mentors and role models for minority youth. The
work “Black” has been expanded to include other
minority groups with youth who are at risk of failing in
this society.
The name
of our program is no more offensive or exclusionary than
the YMCA’s name. The YMCA’s name represents and
describes the historical origin and mission of its beginning. The
YMCA’s mission is unchanged; to promote Christian
principles and values. In
carrying out its mission it does not exclude Moslem, Jews,
or other religious groups, nor does it exclude women as
its name might suggest. Just
as it would be unthinkable to change the YMCA’s name,
the same is true for Black Achievers.
Black Achievers
is a multiracial effort to promote and provide self-esteem
and mentoring by and to minorities at risk.
