Does a head of broccoli a day keep memory loss at bay? According
to a new study published in the journal "Neurology", elderly people
seeking to prevent memory loss and cognitive decline would do well to stock up
on green produce. Researchers at Chicago's Rush University Medical Center studied
more than 3,700 adults over the age of 65. Based on their results, the study's
authors concluded that patients with the highest consumption of green veggies,
such as broccoli and spinach, performed best on memory tests. Less effective at
boosting memory, according to researchers, were diets high in legumes or fruits.
One possible link between green produce and strong memory may have to do with
vitamin E, according to researchers. Past studies have shown that high vitamin
E consumption can improve brain function. Eating green veggies with a moderate
amount of healthful fat, such as salad dressing or vegetable oil, may help vitamin
E absorption. (Men's Health) DID YOU KNOW that broccoli is a rich source
of beta-carotene--one of the major antioxidants your body needs? But beta-carotene
is fat-soluble, which means it has to hitch a ride on fat molecules to make the
trip through your intestinal wall. Without a little fat in the mix, your body
won't absorb nearly as much beta-carotene. (Men's Health) DID YOU KNOW
that two minutes is plenty for brushing your teeth and getting plaque off the
teeth? Any longer may harm the gums. BUT experts says to floss 'before' brushing
to break up debris and then sweep it away. Flossing at least twice a day is best,
but once is enough to keep your mouth healthy. (Prevention)
